  • Pre-engineered manufactured shoring systems (e.g. trench shields, slide rail, and hydraulic jacks) are an efficient and economical method of shoring when used in the right conditions. These off-the-shelf shoring systems are often accompanied by a tabulated data with an OSHA Soil Type depth ratings table and an allowable pressure rating. The stand-alone tabulated data suffice when shoring is installed in basic and simple excavations, however more complicated conditions that are outside the limits of the tabulated data require a site-specific shoring design prepared by a licensed PE. Here are some conditions that are outside the limit of the typical tabulated data, however, keep in mind these are just a few of many scenarios:

    • Excavations over 20 ft in depth

    • Shoring within influence of adjacent structures, railroad tracks, or heavy construction equipment

    • Shoring next to new and existing slopes

    • Conditions where strict deflection criteria must be met

    • Standing groundwater behind shoring

    • Poor soil conditions where excavations are susceptible to base instability effects such as “heave” and “soil piping”
